Dimitrovgrad is an unique example of urban planning. On 2 nd September 1947 the government has officially announced that a new town Dimitrovgrad was about to be created and started to organize brigades for its complete construction. The new town emerged on the land of then three villages – Rakovski, Mariino and Chernokonevo. The construction of the town continued few decades. The main practical reason for its construction was to be created a modern industrial center although that there is also an ideological reason behind its creation. The construction of Dimitrovgrad was destined to be one of the greatest state successes in the 50s years of XX century. The enthusiastic brigadiers were building “city of dreams”, “city of youth”. Today our town is an open air museum of the 50s years of the last century: the unique architecture and examples are a testimony for the historical period in Bulgaria. Dimitrovgrad is a part of the Cultural route of the Council of Europe “ATRIUM- Architecture of the totalitarian regimes of the XX century in European urban memory”. On the territory of Dimitrovgrad municipality, in addition to the impressive architectural monuments, there are various and fascinating historical landmarks, museums and cultural institutes, exciting attractions and customs that have kept history alive to nowadays and give the modern look of the city.
